A well-established litigation team is seeking an experienced Costs Lawyer to join its complex paying-party costs unit in Birmingham. The team handles high-value, technically complex paying-party disputes and instructions from across the firm; the role will involve running and supporting costs litigation for matters with claimed costs regularly in excess of £100,000 (and often substantially higher).

The role combines case handling, drafting points of dispute, providing technical advice on likely assessed outcomes and supporting the delivery and operational management of the complex paying-party service. You will act as a client-facing contact on your files, manage financial performance and billing on your caseload, and contribute to team business development activities.

This is a strong development opportunity for a costs specialist to handle high-value matters, apply technical leadership and, where authorised, conduct proceedings. The post-holder will work within a multi-disciplinary costs product alongside solicitors, costs lawyers and paralegals and report to the senior team lead for the complex paying-party unit.

Approximately 10 years' experience in paying-party costs work (candidates with slightly less experience but demonstrable competency will be considered)
Proven experience handling complex paying-party costs claims (routinely £100k+, often substantially higher) and drafting points of dispute
Experience of costs litigation and ability to support or conduct proceedings where authorised
Strong technical knowledge of costs law, attention to benchmarking and quality control
Good financial/file management skills including billing, credit control and meeting chargeable time targets
Client-facing skills and a proactive approach to business development; advocacy experience advantageous
Qualified Costs Lawyer preferred but substantial practical experience will be considered
