in house legal recruiters Vancouver are retained when a general counsel or chief executive needs counsel the company does not already know. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), 52 general counsel searches, with a shortlist in 24 days and a median accepted offer in 11 weeks. The in-house constant is Toronto's: 17 closed searches over three years. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired its successor general counsel in week 11. In 2025 the Law Society of British Columbia counted 15,081 practicing lawyers, and the indemnity fund covered 527 in-house lawyers, up 16 percent from 2024.

01 — The brief answer

A Vancouver hire is a headquarters, a call, and a contract notice.

A chief executive in Vancouver is usually hiring into a small set of payrolls that actually keep a general counsel. The set is a mining group that publishes its accounts from Vancouver, a telecom and health group that does the same, or a provincial employer whose cash is a grid. The counsel the company wants is often already called somewhere else in Canada, insured on a different basis, and bound to a notice the Employment Standards Act does not set.

That is the work in-house counsel recruiting is retained to do here. Sartori & Partners was founded in early 2017 by Lorenzo Sartori. Vancouver is not one of the published city hubs, and it has no closed-search constant of its own. The in-house line applied here is the Toronto line: 8 years in market, and 17 closed searches over three years. The figures in the grid are the firm-wide corporate record, the same figures on the case studies. The 52 general counsel searches are that firm-wide count since 2017. The 17 are the three-year Toronto in-house count, used because the nearest city with a constant is Toronto. They are not a Vancouver census. Associate-desk comparisons for this city stay on lawyer salary in Vancouver, 2026 and are not folded into this in-house count.

02 — Employers and sectors

Two headquarters publish a 2025 scale. The province publishes a grid.

Teck Resources is the mining employer that files from Vancouver. Its 2025 annual report, with the chief executive's letter dated Vancouver, 18 February 2026, says the company is headquartered in Vancouver. Revenue was CAD 10,756 million in 2025, against CAD 9,065 million in 2024. Adjusted EBITDA was CAD 4,333 million. The consolidated financial statements, approved by the board on 18 February 2026, state that dollar amounts are in Canadian dollars unless otherwise specified, and they place the registered office in Vancouver. Copper and zinc are the products. The steelmaking-coal business was sold in 2024. A counsel search against that report is a search at a metals group whose legal work now sits on copper, zinc, and a transaction that has not closed.

The transaction is the hiring fact that the revenue line does not show. Teck and Anglo American plc agreed a merger of equals to form Anglo Teck, with the headquarters to be in Canada. Shareholders of both companies approved the merger on 9 December 2025. On 15 December 2025 the Government of Canada approved it under the Investment Canada Act. The report states a binding commitment that Anglo Teck will spend at least CAD 4.5 billion in Canada within five years, and an expected cumulative investment of at least CAD 10 billion over 15 years. The same letter of 18 February 2026 is written while the companies are still working toward completion. A general counsel brief in 2026 has to say whether the seat is Teck's seat until completion, the combined company's Canadian seat after it, or both. The report does not print a salary for counsel, and it does not print a headcount of the legal department.

TELUS is the other headquarters with a 2025 number large enough to read. Its annual report states that all financial information is in Canadian dollars unless otherwise specified. Operating revenues and other income were CAD 20,506 million in 2025, from CAD 20,386 million in 2024. The cover's "over $20 billion" is that figure, rounded. At 31 December 2025 the company had approximately 111,500 employees, including 7,800 at TELUS Health and 85,100 at TELUS Digital. Of the 111,500, 25,200 were in Canada and 86,300 were in other countries. Those two country figures add to 111,500. The Health and Digital figures are slices, not a second total. The Form 40-F for the same year gives British Columbia as the jurisdiction of incorporation and a Vancouver address, and it is signed by the Executive Vice President and Chief Legal and Governance Officer. The officer's name is not used. The hiring fact is the office: the company that publishes a chief legal officer title, CAD 20,506 million of revenue, and 25,200 employees in Canada is a Vancouver payroll. The report does not print what that officer is paid.

The provincial employer is the one that does print cash. The British Columbia salary grids, legal counsel level 2, rates effective 5 April 2026, put year of call 6 at CAD 162,136.65 and year of call 11 at CAD 210,269.84. A bi-weekly add-to-pay of an additional 7 percent applies under TBO No. 2025-1001. That is a government lawyer's grid. It is not a Teck offer and it is not a TELUS offer. It is the only fully published in-house scale a Vancouver compensation committee can open without buying a survey. A private offer that sits under year-of-call 6 on that grid is under a provincial counsel of six years' call, before the 7 percent add-to-pay. A private offer that clears year-of-call 11 is above the last step of level 2. Neither comparison is a market median.

The bar around those employers is wider than the headquarters. The Law Society of British Columbia's 2025 annual report counts 15,081 practicing lawyers, 1,755 non-practicing, and 1,161 retired. It counts 654 new lawyers called to the bar. Its practice-area table lists 1,980 lawyers under Corporate and 72 under Securities (reporting companies). Those rows, added to the other practice rows, run far above 15,081, so the table is not a headcount of corporate lawyers. It is a tally of reported areas. The 72 is still the useful cell: lawyers who reported securities work for reporting companies are a short list next to 1,980 who reported corporate work. A Vancouver issuer that wants a securities counsel is not shopping the same pool as a company that wants a commercial generalist.

The research program maps 1,480,000+ lawyers and has run a quarterly survey since 2019. The Toronto book used here, because Vancouver has no map of its own in the city table, is 5,000 lawyers. Private-practice context for the city is on legal recruitment in Vancouver. The Toronto in-house constant, and the employers who sit on the other side of the country, are on in-house counsel recruiting in Toronto. Company-side bands for that constant are on in-house counsel salary in Toronto, 2026. Firm-side bands for this city are on lawyer salary in Vancouver, 2026.

03 — The call

Rule 2-80 admits the lawyer for one employer. A group has several.

A permanent Vancouver job is a call, not a visit. Law Society Rule 2-80, as the transfer page states it, lets a lawyer from another Canadian jurisdiction apply for call and admission as in-house counsel and ask the Credentials Committee to skip the transfer examination or the reading requirement in Rule 2-81. The condition is narrow. The lawyer practices law in British Columbia only for the employer, or for one of its subsidiaries or affiliates. TELUS Health, TELUS Digital, and the telecom company are not the same employing entity on the annual report's own segmentation. Teck and the Anglo Teck combination, once it exists, will not be the same employer either. The contract that goes to the Law Society is the contract of the company that will be named in the call.

Leaving that restriction is a second proceeding. The Credentials Committee can lift it if the lawyer writes and passes the required examination, or completes the Rule 2-81 reading, and the reading path is available where the lawyer is entitled to practice in a reciprocating jurisdiction, or has already practiced full time in British Columbia for two years. A counsel hired on the in-house call cannot take a firm seat, or a seat at a different company outside the affiliate test, by updating a LinkedIn title. The start date on the offer and the date the restriction matches the job are two dates.

Indemnity is the other quirk, and it is optional. The Law Society's in-house page says a lawyer practicing as in-house counsel may pay the indemnity fee for full-time or part-time practice. Part-time coverage is half the cost of full-time coverage where the lawyer's private-practice hours average 25 or fewer a week over a six-month period. Time spent advising only the employer is not what that average is counting. The 2025 annual report is the count of who bought the policy: 527 covered in-house lawyers, up 16 percent from 2024, after the option was opened in 2020. The indemnity fee stayed at CAD 1,800, the ninth consecutive year at that figure. The 527 are buyers. They are not the in-house bar. Most employed counsel remain on the exemption. A board that treats 527 as the size of the Vancouver pool is reading a province-wide insurance take-up, not a headcount of counsel at those headquarters.

The 2026 practice fee is a separate invoice. The Law Society's overview of 2026 fees sets the practice fee at CAD 2,536, up CAD 215, and describes it as the first increase in over six years. Schedule 1 of the Law Society Rules prints the same CAD 2,536 practice fee and the CAD 1,800 indemnity fee base, and a CAD 1,150 investigation fee on a transfer from another Canadian jurisdiction. An in-house lawyer who keeps the exemption pays the practice fee and does not pay the CAD 1,800. An in-house lawyer who buys the policy pays both. Adding them into a single "CAD 4,336 cost of being called" is a choice the lawyer makes, not a fee the Law Society posts as one line for employed counsel.

New calls are a smaller door, and it moves in 2026. The annual report says the Professional Legal Training Course is being retired. Beginning in September 2026, British Columbia adopts the Practice Readiness Education Program. That change matters when the seat will hire a lawyer who is not yet called. It does not replace Rule 2-80 for a counsel who is already called in Ontario or Alberta. The scorecard in week one, before any name is discussed, is short.

  • Employing entity. Which company signs the contract, and which subsidiaries or affiliates the Rule 2-80 advice must cover. A group with three reported segments needs the segment named.
  • Current call. Already practicing in British Columbia, or transferring under Rule 2-80. A transfer still has a committee step even when the examination is waived.
  • Restriction. The in-house call limits practice to the employer and its subsidiaries or affiliates. If the seat must also advise a joint venture or a future combined company, the restriction has to be read against that fact.
  • Indemnity. Exemption, or a purchased policy at CAD 1,800 full time. The 527 covered in-house lawyers in 2025 are the buyers, not the pool.
  • Language of the file. English for the Law Society, the contract, and the British Columbia courts. The brief should say whether the counsel must also mark French documents, U.S. securities filings, or Spanish-language mine contracts. Teck's operations are in the Americas. TELUS reports employees in other countries. The statute does not impose a language test.

04 — Notice and the clock

Acceptance ends the search. The statute does not time the resignation.

Across the 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days on average and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, with a range of 8 to 16. Senior and specialist counsel, a book of 87, reach a shortlist in 18 days and an accepted offer in 8 weeks. Deputy general counsel and head of legal, a book of 47, run to a 21-day shortlist and 10 weeks to offer. The 17 closed Toronto in-house searches are the three-year count on the line this city uses. They are not a second Vancouver total. From written offer to acceptance, those 17 files ran 14 working days. That step sits inside the search. The notice the candidate then serves sits outside it.

A counter-offer arrived on 26 percent of those 17 searches. The 26 percent is a share of the 17. Completion on that same Toronto in-house line is 94 percent. The firm-wide completion rate on retained corporate mandates is 92 percent. The two percentages are different bases. The 94 percent is the line. The 92 percent is the corporate record since 2017. The typical timeline on the Toronto in-house line is 4 to 7 months. The 11 weeks are the general counsel median from signed brief to accepted offer, on the 52. A counsel seat and a general counsel seat do not share one clock, and a Vancouver board that quotes only the 11 weeks for a senior counsel hire is quoting the officer book.

Section 63 of the Employment Standards Act is the employer's floor, not the candidate's resignation. After three consecutive months the employer owes one week of wages as compensation for length of service, or one week of written working notice. After 12 consecutive months the figure is two weeks. After three consecutive years it is three weeks, plus one week for each additional year, to a maximum of eight weeks. The employer may combine notice and pay. The liability is discharged if the employee terminates the employment, retires, or is dismissed for just cause. The province's guidance on quitting says employers usually want some notice, and that the statute does not require the employee to give it. An employee who quits is not paid the compensation for length of service. If the employee does give notice, the employer may end the employment sooner by paying the lesser of the notice the employee gave and the amount the employer would have owed on its own termination.

Counsel contracts in this market are usually longer than eight weeks. Three months, or six, is a common contractual resignation. A board that puts "eight weeks" on the integration plan has read the cap that binds the current employer if that employer fires the lawyer. It has not read the clause that binds the lawyer who is resigning to join. The eight-week figure is still the number to put in the letter as the statutory floor underneath a weak clause. It is not the date the new general counsel starts when the old contract says something longer. Garden leave, if the current contract allows it, is extra time after the notice starts. The Law Society filing under Rule 2-80 runs on its own calendar and can outlast both.

The interview count used with this city is one Toronto cohort of 250 structured interviews. Vancouver does not have a second interview count. That 250 is not cut into a Vancouver subset here, and it is kept apart from the mapped-lawyer figure.

Where the permanent seat cannot wait on a contractual notice plus a Rule 2-80 filing, interim cover is a separate book. Across 60+ interim and fractional engagements since 2017, counted outside the 400+ placements (230+ in-house), the median from first call to start is 7 days. One published file, an interim general counsel for a Series C fintech in San Francisco, was live on the work on day 6. That is cover while the permanent search runs. It is described on interim and fractional legal talent. The British Columbia call remains a filing for the permanent seat.

Clock Base Figure
General counsel shortlist 52 GC/CLO searches since 2017 24 days, average
General counsel accepted offer The same 52 11 weeks median, range 8 to 16
Senior counsel 87 senior and specialist searches 18 days to shortlist, 8 weeks to offer
In-house searches closed Toronto line, three years, applied here 17
Written offer to acceptance Those 17 files 14 working days
Counter-offer Share of those 17 26 percent
Line completion Toronto in-house line 94 percent
Employer notice floor ESA section 63 1 to 8 weeks, employer's termination
Employee quit Province guidance on the same Act No statutory notice required
In-house call Law Society Rule 2-80 Limited to the employer and affiliates

The 14 working days are the offer step on the Toronto in-house files. The 11 weeks are the firm-wide general counsel median from signed brief to accepted offer. Notice and the Rule 2-80 filing run after acceptance. Corporate offer acceptance is 96 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months.

05 — Compensation

The published cells are a firm median and a provincial grid.

Three instruments get confused in a Vancouver compensation committee, and they answer three different questions. NALP's April 2025 press release, with figures as of 1 January 2025 from 66 law offices, puts the national median first-year associate base at CAD 115,000 for lawyers called in 2024. Western Canada's first-year median on the same release is CAD 115,000. By city, the release runs from CAD 97,000 in Ottawa to CAD 130,000 in Toronto. The May 2025 research note repeats that city range and adds that offices of more than 100 lawyers sat at a CAD 130,000 first-year median and boutiques at CAD 127,500. The national median for associates called in 2017 was CAD 222,500. None of those cells is a Vancouver city median. NALP's paid report is where a Vancouver city analysis would sit, and that dollar is not in the free bulletin. None of them is an in-house salary. They are the firm base a counsel can stay on if the move to a company does not clear it.

The in-house cell that is printed is provincial. PEA legal counsel level 2, effective 5 April 2026, runs from CAD 162,136.65 at year of call 6 to CAD 210,269.84 at year of call 11, with a further 7 percent bi-weekly add-to-pay. A private general counsel offer is not "at the Vancouver market" because it matches year of call 8 on that grid. It matches a government step. The comparison is still the right one to make, because it is the only employed-lawyer scale the province posts in dollars. Teck's CAD 10,756 million of 2025 revenue and TELUS's CAD 20,506 million of operating revenues do not contain a counsel band. Using either revenue figure as a proxy for the lawyer's cash is a category error. Revenue is the size of the employer. The offer is a different number, and these reports do not print it.

The retained fee is a percentage of whatever number the board lands on. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of that fee is paid as a retainer when the search is engaged, and the retainer is kept if the client cancels. A GC, CLO, or CCO search carries a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Off-limits on the client's legal department run 24 months, and a lawyer we have placed is not approached for as long as they stay. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates is 96 percent. Retained corporate mandates complete at 92 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months. Repeat clients or referrals account for 68 percent of corporate mandates. Those rates are the corporate record since 2017. They are the terms in the letter before anyone is called.

The salary pages carry the rest of the arithmetic. Lawyer salary in Vancouver, 2026 is the firm-side band, including the Western Canada CAD 115,000 cell and the gap to Toronto's CAD 130,000. In-house counsel salary in Toronto, 2026 is the company-side page that already uses this in-house line: the same 17, the same 26 percent, the same 14 working days. In-house counsel salary, 2026 and general counsel salary, 2026 are the wider bands. A Vancouver offer uses the British Columbia grid and the NALP Western Canada cell, then refuses a Toronto lockstep that the Vancouver filing does not print.

06 — How a search runs

The same six steps. The Vancouver work is the call and the resignation clause.

  2. 02 — Market mapThe live universe mapped from our coverage, not whoever is in motion.
  3. 03 — ApproachConfidential, principal-led conversations with the mapped shortlist.
  4. 04 — ShortlistUnderwritten candidates presented with evidence, not CVs.

  6. 06 — CloseResignation, notice and the first hundred days, managed.

The brief names the employing entity, the affiliates the Rule 2-80 advice must cover, and whether the counsel is already called in British Columbia. It names the indemnity choice: exemption, or a purchased policy at CAD 1,800. It names the notice law of the people most likely to be approached: the contractual months, not the eight-week employer cap, unless the contract is silent. It names whether the seat is Teck until the merger completes, the combined company after, or a TELUS segment whose employees are counted inside the 111,500. The fee letter goes out with that page. Conflicts are checked before outreach. The approach stays blind until both sides want a conversation.

Mapping uses the research program's map of 1,480,000+ lawyers. The Toronto slice of that map, the slice cited here, is 5,000 lawyers. For a general counsel, the published average to a shortlist is 24 days, on the 52. The offer is then built against the PEA level 2 grid of CAD 162,136.65 to CAD 210,269.84 and against NALP's Western Canada first-year median of CAD 115,000, with the resignation clause and the Rule 2-80 filing scheduled before the candidate resigns. The 8 years are the span of the Toronto in-house line, not a Vancouver measurement.

07 — Published files

The clock is the corporate record. This city does not mint a second one.

The three files below are published case studies. They show the method and the dates. They are not Vancouver mandates. The general counsel median on the 52 remains 11 weeks. The 17 remain the Toronto in-house count applied here.

General counsel and in-house counsel in Vancouver

What do in house legal recruiters Vancouver get hired to do?

A general counsel or a chief executive hires them when the company needs counsel it does not already know. A posting reaches lawyers who are looking. A retained search approaches counsel who are in post. Sartori & Partners has completed 400+ placements since 2017 (230+ in-house), including 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches. Those searches reach a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, with a range of 8 to 16. Vancouver has no closed-search constant of its own. The in-house line applied here is Toronto's: 17 closed searches over three years, a 26 percent counter-offer incidence, and 14 working days from written offer to acceptance. The city market sits on legal recruitment in Vancouver. The practice is in-house counsel recruiting.

Which employers set the Vancouver in-house market?

Two headquarters publish a 2025 scale large enough to keep a standing legal officer. Teck Resources, in its 2025 annual report, is headquartered in Vancouver, reported revenue of CAD 10,756 million, and on 15 December 2025 received Investment Canada Act approval for a merger of equals that is still being completed. TELUS, in its 2025 annual report, reported operating revenues and other income of CAD 20,506 million and 111,500 employees at 31 December 2025, of whom 25,200 were in Canada. The public-service cash cell is a different employer: PEA legal counsel level 2, effective 5 April 2026, runs from CAD 162,136.65 at year of call 6 to CAD 210,269.84 at year of call 11. Firm-side cash is on lawyer salary in Vancouver, 2026.

Does a Vancouver in-house lawyer need a new British Columbia call?

Yes when the employment is the lawyer's practice, and the lawyer is not already called in British Columbia. Law Society Rule 2-80 lets a transfer applicant seek call and admission as in-house counsel, and a possible exemption from the transfer examination or the Rule 2-81 reading. The lawyer then practices in British Columbia only for that employer or one of its subsidiaries or affiliates. Lifting the restriction takes the examination, or the reading requirement, and in some cases two years of full-time British Columbia practice first. In-house counsel are exempt from buying the compulsory indemnity policy and may purchase it. In 2025 the Lawyers Indemnity Fund covered 527 in-house lawyers, up 16 percent from 2024. The 2026 practice fee is CAD 2,536. The indemnity fee, if purchased, is CAD 1,800.

What notice sits between an accepted offer and day one in British Columbia?

The search clock stops at the accepted offer. Section 63 of the Employment Standards Act is the employer's floor on a termination without just cause: one week after three months, two weeks after 12 months, then three weeks after three years plus one week per further year, to a maximum of eight weeks, as written notice, pay, or both. The province's own guidance says an employee who quits is not required by the statute to give notice. The date a Vancouver counsel can start is the notice in that lawyer's current contract, not the eight-week cap. On the Toronto in-house line applied to this city, written offer to acceptance is 14 working days, inside a typical timeline of 4 to 7 months. General counsel searches, a book of 52, still reach an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks.

When does a company call general counsel recruiters Vancouver?

When the seat is a general counsel, a chief legal officer, or the counsel who will report to one, and the company wants the approach made before the role is public. Across 52 general counsel and chief legal officer searches since 2017, the shortlist arrives in 24 days on average and the accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, range 8 to 16. A NASDAQ-listed medtech in Boston hired its successor general counsel on that clock: a shortlist of four on day 24, accepted offer in week 11. The fee is 25–30 percent of total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of the fee is the retainer at engagement, and it is kept if the search is cancelled. GC, CLO, and CCO searches carry a 12-month replacement term. Other in-house searches carry 6 months.

How should a board read the published Vancouver pay figures against an offer?

There is no public 2026 Vancouver private in-house median. NALP's April 2025 press release, figures as of 1 January 2025, puts the Western Canada first-year associate median at CAD 115,000 and the Toronto city median at CAD 130,000. That is firm base, not a company package, and the free bulletin does not print a Vancouver city cell. PEA legal counsel level 2, effective 5 April 2026, is a provincial payroll: CAD 162,136.65 at year of call 6 through CAD 210,269.84 at year of call 11, before the 7 percent bi-weekly add-to-pay. TELUS and Teck do not print a counsel salary in the 2025 reports cited here. The in-house salary comparison that carries the Toronto line is in-house counsel salary in Toronto, 2026.
