Legal Recruiters Seattle for Unfilled Company and Firm Seats
The Seattle seat that stays empty is usually a company payroll line — a general counsel, a product counsel, or a head of legal — that density in King County has not covered. We run the retained search that fills it, and the firm-side associate or partner search when the buyer is a law firm.
The Seattle seat that is still empty is a company payroll line.
Seattle is not short of lawyers. The Washington State Bar Association’s licensing snapshot of September 1, 2026 counted 12,910 active attorneys in King County, inside 26,620 active attorneys licensed in Washington. General counsel and heads of HR who search for legal recruiters Seattle usually call after that stock has failed to produce a counsel who will take the seat.
Sartori’s Seattle interview cohort (250 structured interviews) shows the uncovered seat sitting first on a company payroll: a general counsel, a chief legal officer, a head of legal, or a product, privacy, or employment counsel under that chair. Across 48 hiring managers in that cohort over a 24-month window, 29 named the product or privacy desk as the chair that stays open longest.
We have worked the Seattle market for 8 years, for companies and for Seattle offices buying a retained search. Over the last three years we closed 17 in-house searches on this line, at a 94 percent completion rate, on a median of 12 weeks. The firm-side associate and partner books are real. They are not the seat this section opens on.
Legal recruitment Seattle, as a hiring motion, splits on the buyer. A company is buying a payroll chair. A firm is buying a class year or a book. Legal headhunters Seattle candidates meet in a contingency pile treat those as one search. We do not.
The employer is a legal department, or a firm that will say so.
King County's active-attorney count is a stock of licenses. It is not a vacancy list, and it is not a general counsel.

- Sartori Seattle mandate telemetry
The same September 1, 2026 WSBA snapshot recorded 398 house-counsel licenses, a separate license type from the active-attorney roll. A company that needs a lawyer admitted elsewhere to advise only that business is often hiring into that house-counsel count, not into a King County litigation partnership. Corporate Counsel Section membership on the snapshot was 1,029, against 957 on December 31, 2025. Section membership is not a headcount of employed counsel. It is a demand signal that the in-house bar is organizing, not that 1,029 chairs are open.
In-house demand clusters where product velocity and multi-state operations justify a desk. Cloud and commerce platforms headquartered in Seattle and on the Eastside hire product and privacy counsel. Retail and logistics operators hire commercial and employment counsel. Aerospace and industrial manufacturers hire litigation and regulatory counsel. Life-sciences and device companies hire a counsel who can sit with the FDA file and the commercial contract. PE-backed software and healthcare platforms hire a first legal lead after an add-on. Those are company buyers. The feeder benches they hire from include the Seattle offices of national firms and the Pacific Northwest partnerships that already staff those industries, among them Perkins Coie, Davis Wright Tremaine, K&L Gates, and Foster Garvey.
Firm-side demand is the second buyer on legal headhunters Seattle shortlists, and it prices off a different ladder. NALP’s Bulletin+ for June 2025, reporting the 2025 Associate Salary Survey with salaries as of January 1, 2025, put Seattle at 14.3 percent of offices on a $225,000 first-year base — 7 offices in that city cut. NALP’s May 28, 2025 press release put the U.S. all-firms first-year median at $200,000 on that same January 1, 2025 date. Reuters, on June 2, 2026, reported that Milbank’s memo set a new scale from $235,000 for a first-year to $455,000 for an eighth-year, effective July 1, 2026. A Seattle office that never paid $225,000 on January 1, 2025 is not automatically on $235,000 in July 2026. The company that benchmarks an in-house exit against the new first-year base is pricing the wrong rung.
A general counsel at a public software company on the Eastside told us, Four of the last six approaches died on an unvested cliff inside nine months. That is a compensation-design failure, not a shortage of résumés in a county with 12,910 active attorneys. The pay tables that size the gap are general counsel salary in Seattle, in-house counsel salary in Seattle, and BigLaw associate salary in Seattle.
Four of the last six approaches died on an unvested cliff inside nine months.
Density is not coverage. The authorized seat is.
A county with 12,910 active attorneys can still fail to produce one person the board will put on the payroll.
Sartori maps about 8,500 lawyers in Seattle. That coverage figure describes who can be reached in the city.
Of 17 closed Seattle in-house searches over three years, 7 were product or commercial counsel, 4 were privacy or data counsel, 3 were employment counsel, and 3 were corporate or associate-general-counsel seats. 5 of those 17 files ran past 16 weeks. 4 of those 5 still had an oral equity schedule at the final interview. That is the number that does not flatter the method: we cannot outrun a company that has not written the refresh.
Sartori’s Seattle mandate telemetry on the in-house line records a counter-offer on 29 percent of the 17 closed files. The same telemetry puts the median from offer to acceptance at 12 working days once the vesting schedule and the bonus target are in the letter. The associate line is a different book: 23 closed searches over three years, a counter-offer incidence of 39 percent, and 11 working days from offer to acceptance, on a typical window of 6 to 12 weeks. The partner line is 15 closed searches, a counter-offer incidence of 44 percent, and 14 working days, on a typical window of 4 to 7 months.
Credential gates are specific. An active Washington license is the default if the lawyer will be held out to third parties. The house-counsel license, 398 of them on the September 1, 2026 snapshot, is the path for a lawyer admitted elsewhere who advises only the employer. A posted search at an employer with 15 or more employees has had to show the wage scale or salary range, plus a general description of benefits and other compensation, since RCW 49.58.110 took effect on January 1, 2023. From July 27, 2025 through July 27, 2027 the statute allows a cure after written notice. A confidential successor search that never becomes a posting does not trip that disclosure. That is why the sitting general counsel’s succession stays off the careers page.
What legal recruiters Seattle actually run for the company and the firm.
Four products, one geography. The in-house figures are the Seattle company line. Associate and partner work is retained search, quoted as a different product.
General counsel, CLO, and head of legal
Standing company seats: first general counsel, successor GC while the incumbent remains, chief legal officer, and head of legal at a PE-backed platform. This is the uncovered seat the page opens on.
Product, privacy, and employment counsel
The desks that absorb Seattle volume under a general counsel: commercial and product counsel, privacy and data counsel, and employment counsel for a multi-state workforce. The title is counsel. The reporting line is the company.
Associate seats for Seattle firms
When a Seattle office buys a retained associate search — corporate, intellectual property, employment, litigation — we run it as a firm mandate. 23 closed associate searches over three years sit on that line, not on the in-house count.
Partner seats for Seattle firms
Retained partner search for Seattle offices of national firms and for Pacific Northwest partnerships. 15 closed partner searches over three years are a separate book. The buyer is the firm, not the company.
A composite from that in-house telemetry: a public software company on the Eastside needed a product counsel after enterprise contracting outgrew the general counsel’s own mark-up. 2 finalists held refresh grants with cliffs inside 7 months. The first brief still described a class-year associate on the $235,000 scale. We rewrote it as a company seat with a written vesting schedule. The file closed in 11 weeks in 2026, from another in-house product counsel, not from a first-year associate.
A second composite: a PE-backed multi-state operator in the Seattle metro needed an employment associate general counsel while the incumbent remained. The company would not name the search for 1 month. The file drew a counter-offer and still signed inside the 12-working-day median. Confidential successor work is slow until the board will say the sentence.
A hiring partner at an Am Law firm with a Seattle office told us, We match the printed class year. The letter still loses the candidate when the refresh date is oral. That sentence is why associate search and in-house search do not share a shortlist. Of the 23 associate closes, the fight is class-year credit and hours. Of the 17 in-house closes, the fight is the equity calendar.
When the gap is a defined program rather than a standing chair — a launch, parental leave, a financing — the faster product is interim and fractional counsel. Company buyers who want the standing team start at in-house and general counsel recruiting, general counsel search, and first general counsel search. A technology general counsel is a narrower brief on technology general counsel search. An intellectual-property lead is head of IP search. Firm buyers use associate recruiting and partner recruiting.
We match the printed class year. The letter still loses the candidate when the refresh date is oral.
Retained, exclusive, written down before the first call.
Companies and firms engage us on a retained basis for Seattle mandates. We agree scope and terms in writing before any approach is made.
- 01
Mandate blueprint
We write the seat before we name a person: reporting line, whether the lawyer must hold a Washington active license or a house-counsel license, the equity refresh date, and whether the sitting general counsel will be told. A Seattle brief that still reads as a lockstep associate is rewritten as a company seat.
- 02
Market map
We map the relevant benches — platform and product legal teams, privacy and employment desks, Seattle offices of national firms, and PE-backed heads of legal — then the firm-side supply that might move. No posting. No job-board scrape.
- 03
Blind outreach
Approaches go to sitting counsel who are not looking. The company is not named until both sides have agreed to a qualified conversation. Seattle is a small, talkative bar; exclusivity is the process, not an optional extra.
- 04
Credential and conflicts screen
We test Washington active status against the house-counsel license, matter walls on cloud, retail, and aerospace files, and whether a posted search would trigger the wage-and-benefits disclosure in RCW 49.58.110. Conflicts with the company's panel are surfaced before the shortlist.
- 05
Offer engineering
We set cash and equity against the published poles that actually move Seattle candidates, then hold the 12-working-day offer-to-acceptance window on the in-house line. Counter-offers are expected: Seattle in-house mandate telemetry records them on 29 percent of those files.
- 06
Close and ramp
Notice, start date, and the first 90 days are part of the mandate. A placement counts when the lawyer is in the seat, not when the term sheet is signed.
Completion on the Seattle in-house line is 94 percent. The median time to an accepted offer on that line is 12 weeks. Median offer-to-acceptance is 12 working days. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire’s total first-year compensation. Thirty percent of the fee is paid as a retainer at engagement and kept if the client cancels. There is no contingency option. A 12-month replacement term applies to retained general counsel, chief legal officer, and chief compliance officer searches. Other in-house searches carry 6 months. Offer acceptance on corporate mandates, firm-wide, is 96 percent. Retention of placed in-house leaders is 97 percent at 12 months and 91 percent at 24 months.
Sartori’s research program maps 1,480,000+ lawyer profiles, with quarterly surveys since 2019. In 4 quarterly survey waves since 2025, 19 of 52 Seattle hiring-manager responses arrived with a firm-side title on a company seat. We send those briefs back. A search that starts as “partner-equivalent” will not produce a general counsel the CEO will appoint. Since 2017 the firm has completed 400+ placements (230+ in-house), of which 52 were general counsel or chief legal officer searches. The Seattle 17 are the local slice of that company book, not a second global total.
The full method — mandate blueprint, market mapping, blind outreach, vetting, offer engineering, close — is on our methodology. The umbrella mandate, including who pays, is on legal recruiters.
The company’s 2026 calendar is an equity cliff and a statute, not a headcount slogan.
Demand for the Seattle in-house seat is being rewritten by pay-disclosure rules and by a scale that most local offices had not adopted on the prior rung.
RCW 49.58.110 has required a wage scale or salary range, and a general description of benefits and other compensation, on each job posting by an employer with 15 or more employees since January 1, 2023. The 2025 amendments, in force from July 27, 2025 through July 27, 2027, add a cure period after written notice before a job applicant may seek the statute’s remedies. A company that posts a confidential general counsel succession in order to “see who applies” publishes the band and tells the incumbent’s market that the chair is open. Retained search is the path that does not post.
The associate scale moved on a different date from the in-house letter. NALP’s May 28, 2025 press release put the U.S. all-firms first-year median at $200,000 as of January 1, 2025, and the June 2025 Bulletin+ put 14.3 percent of 7 Seattle offices at $225,000 on that date. Reuters reported on June 2, 2026 that the new scale runs from $235,000 to $455,000 and takes effect on July 1, 2026. A lateral associate comparing a Seattle office that has matched against one that has not is not comparing two versions of the same job. The class-year grid is on the 2026 BigLaw salary scale. First-year and mid-level local reads are on first-year associate salary in Seattle and law firm associate salary in Seattle. Counsel who have already left the firm ladder use legal counsel salary in Seattle.
The license stock did not shrink while those pay rules tightened. On September 1, 2026 the WSBA counted 12,910 active attorneys in King County and 26,620 active attorneys in Washington, plus 398 house-counsel licenses and 1,029 Corporate Counsel Section memberships (957 on December 31, 2025). More licenses and a larger section do not thaw a counsel whose cliff sits inside nine months. Across the 250 structured interviews, the 41 of 64 counsel at years 5 to 10 who refused a move inside that window are the supply constraint. The King County roll is not.
Geography for the search is the metro, not a single downtown tower. Platform legal teams sit in Seattle and on the Eastside. The city hub that carries practices, firms, and the wider market note is Seattle, under where we work in the United States. Company buyers who already know the seat, rather than the city, start at our work for companies.
The rest of the Seattle brief lives on pages we already wrote.

Seattle legal search — questions companies actually ask
What do legal recruiters Seattle companies retain for a confidential general counsel hire?
A single retained mandate, terms in writing before any approach. Sartori closed 17 Seattle in-house searches over three years at a 94 percent completion rate, with a 12-week median to an accepted offer. Companies engage us on that retained basis. We do not run a confidential successor search as a multi-agency contingency. Firm-wide, general counsel and chief legal officer searches reach a shortlist in 24 days and an accepted offer in a median of 11 weeks, across 52 such searches since 2017. See how a retained legal search actually runs.
Who hires the uncovered Seattle in-house seat?
A company's general counsel, chief legal officer, CEO, or head of HR — not a posting. The Washington State Bar Association's licensing snapshot of September 1, 2026 counted 12,910 active attorneys in King County and 26,620 active attorneys in Washington. The same snapshot recorded 398 house-counsel licenses. Seattle firms buy associate and partner searches as a second buyer. The city market page is Seattle legal market coverage.
How long does a Seattle general counsel search take?
On the Seattle in-house line the median is 12 weeks from mandate to accepted offer, with a median 12 working days from offer to acceptance. Firm-wide, the general counsel and chief legal officer median is 11 weeks, on a range of 8 to 16 weeks, across 52 GC and CLO searches since 2017. Of 17 closed Seattle in-house searches over three years, 5 ran past 16 weeks, and 4 of those 5 still had an oral equity schedule at the final interview. Speed follows a brief the company will actually sign.
How are you paid for a Seattle search?
Companies and firms engage us on a retained basis. The fee is 25–30 percent of the hire's total first-year compensation, and 30 percent of the fee is paid as a retainer at engagement. There is no contingency option. The hiring organization pays. For the engagement model, read working with a legal recruiter and brief a search.
Do you recruit Seattle associates and partners as well as in-house counsel?
Yes. The 17 closed files on the in-house line are separate from 23 closed associate searches and 15 closed partner searches in Seattle over the same three years. Company buyers start at in-house and general counsel recruiting. Firm buyers start at associate recruiting and partner recruiting.
What does a Seattle in-house seat actually pay against firm scale?
NALP's May 28, 2025 press release on the 2025 Associate Salary Survey put the U.S. all-firms first-year median at $200,000 as of January 1, 2025. The June 2025 NALP Bulletin+ put 14.3 percent of 7 reporting Seattle offices on a $225,000 first-year base as of that same date. Reuters, on June 2, 2026, reported Milbank's new scale at $235,000 for a first-year and $455,000 for an eighth-year, effective July 1, 2026. Those poles size why a company loses a scale associate and why most Seattle offices were not on the prior scale. The local tables are in-house counsel salary in Seattle and law firm associate salary in Seattle.
Must a confidential Seattle search publish a salary range?
Not if it never becomes a posting. RCW 49.58.110, effective January 1, 2023, requires an employer with 15 or more employees to disclose the wage scale or salary range and a general description of benefits and other compensation in each job posting. From July 27, 2025 through July 27, 2027 the statute gives a cure window after written notice. A retained search that is never posted is not that solicitation. Hiring without an advertisement remains available.
Can we cover the seat with interim counsel while the permanent search runs?
Yes. A defined gap — parental leave, a product launch, a financing — is often faster as interim and fractional counsel than as a permanent hire on the 12-week in-house median. We can run both so the work is covered while the search is live. The permanent seat is still the mandate this search is for.

Seattle in-house and firm search
If the seat is still empty, brief it as the seat it is.
A general counsel, product counsel, associate, or partner search in Seattle is a retained mandate. We listen first — to the reporting line, the license, and whether the equity date is written. No obligation.
